You’ve heard the expression ‘communication is key’.
It’s true, so you need to create communication that ‘speaks’ to the intended audience even though we are not always ‘speaking’ all the time.
Let’s start with the basic types of communication, knowing that communication consists of at least two parties, and that there is an exchange of information between the sender and the receiver.
VISUAL COMMUNICATION
” o_0 “
Believed to be the oldest form of communication, visual communication was used by the earliest civilization in the forms of cave paintings and carvings.
Visual communication uses objects, shapes, signs, graphics, illustrations, maps, photographs to convey the message. The accuracy of visual communication is open to interpretation and perception of the receiver.
WRITTEN COMMUNICATION
“Read me”
Written communication is based on words, which means languages, alphabets and characters have been developed.
It comes in the form of newspapers, letters, reports, bulletins, manuals etc. It is considered to be a form of formal communication in business and is used as reference, records and proof of validity, authority and authenticity.
VERBAL COMMUNICATION
“I’m just saying….”
Verbal communication uses spoken words in conversations, speeches, discussions, presentations (and singing too!).
Verbal communication is more engaging as the sender is able to express emotions and influence the delivery through speed, intonation and volume.
It is considered to be an informal form of communication and is hardly accepted as official instructions or used as proof.
NON VERBAL COMMUNICATION
“I didn’t open my mouth, but I told you”
The most interesting of all communication is non-verbal communication as it has a strong influence on verbal communication and is capable of delivering a message or amplifying it through actions.
Non-verbal communication happens through body language, facial expression, eye contact, posture and even attire. Most people rely on body language to evaluate the truthfulness of a person in business and casual situations.
