TECHNOLOGY

Technology is one of the most important tools needed for businesses today for efficiency and optimal performance. But, what is technology? First, let’s find out how we got here.

Dictionary defines technology as ‘the application of scientific knowledge for practical purposes, especially in industry’.

Wikipedia says technology ‘is the sum of techniques, skills, methods, and processes used in the production of goods or services or in the accomplishment of objectives, such as scientific investigation’.

To understand how we got here, let’s start from the beginning.

Some say the first form of technology is the wheel. Based on archaeological evidence, the first wheel was created in 3,500BC by the Mesopotamians to make pottery. It wasn’t until 2,000 years later when the Greeks invented the concept of wheel and axle that it was used for transportation.

Others say, stone tools were the first form of technology. It was discovered at an early human campsite in Tanzania. The campsite sits on a bed that is estimated to be between 1.6 million and 2.2 million years based on potassium-argon dating. The stone tools are estimated to be around 1.8 million years and were used for cutting, chopping and hammering.

The discovery of fire is important in human history as it was used for survival. It could keep humans warm and ward off wild animals. It was also used for cooking which in turn helped to make digestion better, and well, better tasting food.
